Good morning, folks, it's Noah, back at it with an early morning hike. Today's adventure kicked off at 4:30 am, and I did not want to get out of bed. with a gentle nudge from my wife, I managed to get up, start my water for the French press, and gear up, only to find myself out of coffee, not a great way to start my day... Yet, I persevered, meeting Ted a tick after 5 am and we were gliding our way up Fairway by 5:15.
Tomorrow morning at 4:20 am is the Winter Solstice, the first official day of Winter and the shortest day of the year. With the early starts, I have been too early for sunrise, and that is going to change over the coming weeks. However, there is something just as special about the dark. Ted and I enjoyed the calm, quiet solitude of the dark this morning. With snowmaking focused on the lower mountain, it was nearly silent as we neared the summit, getting views of Ludlow waking up and starting its day. As we near a busy holiday week up here, it is nice to have a slice of peace in the early hours. That was one of my favorite things as a snowmaker: when you were able to catch a brief moment to turn off your snowmobile, look out over the valley, and take in the stillness, the darkness, you could almost feel the mountain resting before another busy day of skiing and riding.
