97. Saturday, March 29th

Today's adventure was a solo hike for me; after a day of playing hooky yesterday up at Stowe, it was a hard ask to get anyone out with me today. As much as I enjoy the camaraderie, it was nice to have some alone time to reflect.
Last week Ludlow lost two people that I am sure most of you have seen before. You might not have known their names, but they would have been one of the people who greeted you with a smile as you went about your weekend. When we lose people in small towns, it sends ripples through the community—not the kind that scatter us, but the kind that pull us in. They leave holes—quiet ones—that won’t ever be filled. But in the space they leave behind, something else takes shape. We bump into each other a little more often, check in a little more intentionally, and remember that being part of this place means looking out for one another. A story gets told. A favorite saying gets passed around. A little more care gets shown. And just like that, their absence becomes a reminder of what it means to truly belong.
Today’s hike was quiet—but not lonely. Rain fell most of the way up, and by the time I reached the summit, the snow was sealed under a thin crust of ice. Grief can feel like that sometimes—quiet, cold, and covering more than you expect. But the snow is beneath the crust, what’s underneath is still there. Still soft. Still holding warmth.
